And Now a Word From ...

Posted: May 15th, 2013

With VanCAF imminent we'd like to take a moment to thank some of the businesses that have reached out to support us this year. Either through free advertising, discounted supplies, or with donations to our fundraiser raffles, VanCAF 2013 couldn't have happened without the following businesses:

The Peak.Fm

Oni Press

Urban Fare

Metropolis Comics & Toys

Starbucks Coffee

Jukebox Print

Geist Magazine
And last, but certainly not least, VanCAF is possible thanks to partnership with the beautiful Roundhouse Community Centre and the Vancouver Park Board

Thank you everyone! We can't wait to see you in two weeks for VanCAF 2013!

Guests & Exhibitors

Posted: December 13th, 2012

First off we'd like to announce two new guests for VanCAF 2013: political cartoonist Matt Bors (War is Boring, Life Begins at Incorporation) and Vancouver Island illustrator Simon Roy (Jan's Atomic Heart, Prophet)!

The invitations have officially been issued and we'll be spending the next few weeks updating the website with our exhibitor list. If you applied, be sure to check your inbox and spam filters for our response!

We are both thrilled and sad to say that we had so many applications, we had to put people on a waitlist. This is thrilling because it shows that VanCAF is growing, but it's sad because it means we had to turn away cartoonists, which we never want to do. But fret not! If you have been placed on our waitlist we are doing our very best to try and fit you in ASAP, and if you missed the deadline, be sure to apply anyway! The show is over five months away, and a lot can happen in that time!

The Deadline Cometh

Posted: December 3rd, 2012

Or, more accurately, the deadline is here. Applications submitted after this date will still be considered, but placed on a waitlist pending table availability. Applicants awaiting word can expect to hear back from us within one week.

Furthermore, we've got two more guests to add to our 2013 line-up! We're delighted to announce Jeph Jacques (Questionable Content) and Steve LeCouilliard (Much the Miller's Son, Una the Blade)! Check out the full guest list and get yourself pumped.

VanCAF 2013 Application is Live!

Posted: June 16th, 2012

The application form for exhibiting at VanCAF 2013 is now live, so you should definitely get in on that action. Next year's festival will be May 25th-26th at the Roundhouse Community Centre, and we'll be looking at expanding the hall to make sure we can fit even more great artists into your stellar, comics-related weekend.

Deadline for application is December 3rd, 2012--so apply now (so it's out of the way, you procrastinator!) We'll be announcing our guest line-up for 2013 in the months to come.

It's a Wrap!

Posted: May 28th, 2012

VanCAF 2012 has come and gone, and we are absolutely delighted to announce that it was a complete success! The comments we've been receiving from guests, exhibitors, and attendees have been truly thrilling.

We give an extremely fond thank you to our venue, the Roundhouse, and our contact there, Brenda Raccanelli. It's obvious from the e-mails and tweets we've received that the Roundhouse was an extremely successful venue, and we look forward to cultivating a long relationship with them for future years.

Secondly, the show wouldn't have been a success without our league of excellent volunteers. Their hardwork made the show possible, and we can't thank them enough for the time they took out of their weekends to make VanCAF a success. Volunteers, you were loved and adored by all!

Prizes: The winners of all the raffles and art auctions have been contacted. Thank you all for participating and helping to support the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival. With your support, we know VanCAF 2013 will be an even bigger success!

X Marks the Spot

Posted: May 19th, 2012

And, finally, we've added the last exhibitor to the list for VanCAF 2012: Kip Manley, Oregon-based writer of The City of Roses! When all is said and done we have a whopping ninety-two exhibitors. We're thrilled to be able to announce that many exhibitors in VanCAF's first year, and we can't wait to see the applications we'll get for VanCAF 2013.

While most of our exhibitors hail from Vancouver (way to go, hometown!) we'll also have artists coming from as far as California, New York, Massachusetts, and Ontario--so be sure to come by and make their trip worthwhile!

For a list of the exhibitors and where they're going to be on the show floor, check out our floor map here, or look at the full list of exhibitors here!

Want to get to know all the artists better? Then also consider hitting up our Saturday night social event in Yaletown! You can find the details on the events page or check out the Facebook page to RSVP!

The Final Countdown

Posted: May 18th, 2012

With only a week to go until VanCAF, things are getting pretty heated. We've just announced three more exhibitors for the list: Gabriel Frizzera (Isthmus, Heavy Metal Heart), Klara Woldenga (Robot Comics), and Albert Art (The Homeless Quatchi Project).

In other news, 4geeks Media has uploaded their Free Comic Book Day coverage at Metropolis Comics--check it out, and you might just see VanCAF organizer Shannon Campbell engaging in excessive use of hands-talking!

Lastly, VanCAF could still use a few extra volunteers--especially around lunch time on the Saturday and Sunday. If you think you could lend a hand, even just for a couple of hours, please mosey on over to our forums and sign up! A show is only as good as its volunteers, and we know Vancouver is hiding some of the best!

Holy Exhibitors, Batman!

Posted: May 14th, 2012

Followers of our Twitter, Google+, or Facebook page may have noticed the flurry of added exhibitors this weekend. But to recap, we're super-excited to include Nina Matsumoto of Yokaiden and Simpsons Comics fame to our guestlist, as well as Molly Nemecek (Insane Yeti Squirrel, Strange Aeons), Doug Savage (Savage Chickens), and Sam Alden (Eighth Grade) to our exhibitors. Be sure to check them all out and hit them up at the festival!

In other news, guest Sarah Leavitt's book Tangles has been officially released in the US, and to great reviews! It's always encouraging when Canadian indie cartoonists can break the border barrier--way to go, Sarah!

History in the Making

Posted: May 8th, 2012

Late addition guest Ken Boesem has announced "Maple Leaf Heroes: The Origins of Canada's Golden Age of Comics"! This event will be at 3 PM on Saturday, May 26th, and features local cartoonist and comics historian Ken Boesem has he explores Canada's development in the world of comics. Check out our full list of events to plan out your VanCAF weekend!

In exhibitor-related news, we're very pleased to announce that another Portland artist has joined the list of VanCAF exhibitors--Lucy Bellwood!

Lastly, we're delighted to hear that VanCAF exhibitors are kicking butt and taking names, though not perhaps in that order. Both Cloudscape Comics and Katie & Steven Shanahan have been nominated for the 2012 Gene Day Self-Publisher award (for 21 Journeys and Silly Kingdom, respectively). Yowza!
